Mortice locks

  • Five Lever Mortice Deadlocks conforming to British Standard number BS3621: This is a recognised insurance approved security door lock. This type of door lock has a single 'dead' bolt that is locked and unlocked with a key. It is embedded in the door for extra strength, providing exceptional security and is specified by many insurance companies.
  • A Mortice Sash Lock has all the features of a deadlock, but also has a built in latch which can be latched closed by the handles without locking. These types of lock are normally used on internal doors, so that the door can be closed, but it can also be locked for security.
  • The 2 and 3 Lever Door Locks are generally not recommended for use on exterior doors, However can be found typically on internal doors to provide low level of security. Doors such as; bathroom, bedroom and study doors although these can also be used on storage cupboards etc.

Cylinder locks

  • Rim cylinder locks are most frequently seen on residential front and back doors. They work by using a key to turn a cylinder, which pulls the lock bolt forward and backwards from the bolt keep fitted to the door frame.

Night Latches on Wooden Doors

A standard Night latch automatically locks on closing the door and is unlocked by a key from the outside and the handle inside. A High Security version conforming to BS3621 is available. This is a double security lock with an inside handle, which can be locked from the inside with a key and automatically deadlocks on closing. On wooden doors we recommend that this is fitted at a height of around 4.5 ft but this can vary according to the type of door and its construction. Additionally we recommend installing ‘Door Viewers’, these are fitted into the centre of the door allowing the occupants a view to the outside without opening the door. Door viewers are simple to fit and in expensive.

Insurance Recommendations

Please find details below used by Insurance companies as a minimum security standard within their household insurance policies. All doors and windows to your home must be secured by:

  • Built in deadlocking cylinder locks and security bolts if the door is double glazed; or
  • Mortise security bolts or other key operated locks to British Standard 3621 fitted at the top and bottom of each portion of French windows or double sliding patio doors; and
  • All opening sections of the basement, ground floor or easily accessible windows to your home are secured by key operated window locks.
